What are Chinese Measure Words?

In Chinese, you can't just say "three books" — you need a special word between the number and the noun. These words are called measure words (量词, liàngcí) or classifiers.

For example, to say "three books" in Chinese, you say 三本书 (sān běn shū), where 本 (běn) is the measure word for books. Different types of objects require different measure words.
