Chinese has not one but three common measure words for things that are flat: 张 (zhāng), 片 (piàn) and 幅 (fú). They overlap just enough to confuse, so learners default to 张 for everything flat — and produce sentences natives would never say.
Here's the boundary, in one line each:
- 张 (zhāng) — a flat object: paper, a table, a bed, a ticket, a face.
- 片 (piàn) — a flat portion: a slice, a patch, a stretch, a fragment.
- 幅 (fú) — a flat work: a painting, calligraphy, a piece of fabric.
Our 张 / 片 / 幅 comparison page is built for the moment you're stuck between two of them. This article explains the why.
张 — flat things you can pick up and count(张——能拿起数数的扁平物)
张 is the workhorse for discrete, flat, countable objects. Think "a flat rectangle with edges you can see":
- 一张纸 (a sheet of paper)
- 一张桌子 (a table)
- 一张床 (a bed)
- 一张票 (a ticket)
- 一张照片 (a photo)
- 一张脸 (a face)
The key idea is discreteness: the thing is a self-contained flat unit. Papers are countable, tables are countable, so they take 张. See 张 (zhāng).
"张"是离散、扁平、可数物体的主力。想成"一块看得到边缘的扁平方块":
- 一张纸
- 一张桌子
- 一张床
- 一张票
- 一张照片
- 一张脸
核心概念是离散性:东西是一个自成一体的扁平单元。纸可数、桌可数,所以用"张"。见张 (zhāng)。
片 — a portion cut or seen from something bigger(片——从更大整体切下或看出的一片)
片 is about a part of a larger whole — a slice, a patch, a fragment, a stretch of something continuous:
- 一片药 (a tablet of medicine — one slice off the pack)
- 一片面包 (a slice of bread)
- 一片草地 (a patch of grass)
- 一片天空 (a stretch of sky)
- 一片森林 (a stretch of forest)
You can't count sky as "one, two, three" the way you count tables — you see a piece of it, and that's 片. It's also the measure word behind 片 for films (a "slice" of moving images) and 照片 vs 相片 nuance. See 片 (piàn).
The tell: if the thing is a fragment or a continuous expanse you're partitioning, it's 片. If it's a whole flat object, it's 张.
幅 — flat works of art(幅——扁平的艺术作品)
幅 is the narrowest of the three, and the easiest to get right once you know it: it's for pictorial or textile works —
- 一幅画 (a painting)
- 一幅字 (a piece of calligraphy)
- 一幅窗帘 (a curtain)
- 一幅布 (a length of cloth)
The common thread is that the thing is made, displayed, or hung. If you'd frame it or hang it on a wall, reach for 幅. See 幅 (fú).
"幅"是三者中最窄的,一旦知道规律也最容易用对:它用于书画或织物类作品——
- 一幅画
- 一幅字
- 一幅窗帘
- 一幅布
共同点是这东西被制作、展示或悬挂。如果你会把它装框或挂上墙,就用"幅"。见幅 (fú)。
The overlap, resolved(重叠之处,如何化解)
The tricky part is that one noun can invite more than one word:
- 纸 (paper) → 一张纸 (a sheet, countable) but 一片纸 (a scrap/fragment of paper).
- 画 (painting/drawing) → 一幅画 (a finished work) but 一张画 (a picture sheet, casual).
- 桌子 (table) → 一张桌子 only; it's a solid object, never a "portion".
So the choice isn't about the noun alone — it's about how you're framing the thing in that sentence: as an object (张), a portion (片), or a work (幅).
棘手之处在于,一个名词可能招来不止一个量词:
- 纸 → 一张纸(一张,可数)也可以是 一片纸(一片纸屑/碎片)。
- 画 → 一幅画(完成的作品)也可以是 一张画(一张画片,随意说法)。
- 桌子 → 只用 一张桌子;它是实心物体,绝不会是"一片"。
所以选择不取决于名词本身——而取决于你在那句话里如何框定这东西:当作物体(张)、一片(片)、还是作品(幅)。
How to remember it(怎么记)
Picture a wall in a gallery, then zoom out:
- The sheet of paper in your hand is 一张.
- The slice of cake on the plate is 一片.
- The painting hanging on the wall is 一幅.
Object → portion → work. Three flat things, three different framings.
想象画廊里的一面墙,然后拉远:
- 手里的那张纸是 一张。
- 盘里的那片蛋糕是 一片。
- 墙上挂的那幅画是 一幅。
物体 → 一片 → 作品。三种扁平物,三种不同的框定。
